Jaguar National Rally 2009 Program

Friday 10th April

Most delegates will arrive from interstate with their cars on Good Friday morning on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry into Devonport (see map) Jaguar club members will escort guests to a breakfast venue, before leaving for Hobart, approximately three hours drive from Devonport.

Registration will be at Rally Headquarters from 11am on Good Friday April 10th. That evening will be a Welcome Cocktail Reception sponsored by Jaguar Australia from 6.30pm on the Mezzanine level. We expect to have some Mark 2s on display in front of the Hotel.

Saturday 11th April

The Concours and display will be held on the forecourt and lawns of Parliament House, located at 2-8 Murray Street Hobart between the Docks and famous Salamanca Market (see map). It is planned that a cavalcade will arrive at the venue after assembling at the cenotaph grounds and traveling through the city. Saturday evening will be a Buffet River Cruise aboard the historic ferry Cartela.

Sunday 12th April

The Sports Day will be held at Baskerville Raceway, 30 minutes drive North of Hobart, on the Eastern Shore (see map). The day will consist of timed Regularity Runs as well as other events. Baskerville is a well designed 2 klm raceway, and is situated in a natural amphitheatre which is ideal for spectators. The course has a good range of fast sweepers, a long straight, and some off camber corners. See here for more information.

We are offering two alternate runs:
  (1) Travel to Baskerville Raceway to watch several time trials and take lunch, then on to the Coal River Valley wine region taking in afternoon tea at historic Richmond or perhaps whilst visiting some of the many wineries in the region.
  (2) Travel down the picturesque Huon/Channel region to the Tahune Airwalk to enjoy a gourmet BBQ lunch and entry into this world-renowned attraction. Travel back to Hobart via Peppermint Bay for coffee.

Sunday evening will be the Presentation Dinner to be held at the Grand Chancellor Ballroom. This will include the presentation of awards and an opportunity for Queensland to give a presentation for the 2010 National Rally.

Monday 13th April

A Farewell Brunch will be held at the Tasmanian Golf Club overlooking Pittwater and Frederick Henry Bay, following which will be the commencement of the Post Rally Tour. The Tour will proceed down the Tasman Peninsula to Port Arthur, then proceed the following day up the East Coast and across the North East Coast, with the final night in Launceston, leaving the following day to travel to Devonport for those wishing to return home on the ferry. The final day will make up part of the Post Rally Tour, and the journey to Devonport will be via various attractions.

Sporting Event

National Rally participants are warmly invited to participate in the Sporting Event.

Jaguar has a magnificent history of achievements in motor sport, so the Sporting Day is an integral part of the Rally you shouldn't miss! The activities are all about precise driving, within your capabilities and experience. And it's a fun experience!

While for many it may well be a speed event, it can equally be a spirited drive in a very safe environment. Anyone can do it and it is not necessarily going to be hard on your car.

The competition has two main components:

The first is the completion of two laps of Baskerville circuit with the aim to achieve as near as possible an equal time for each lap. All vehicles are grouped in classes, so there are both class winners and an outright winner.

The second is a team relay race, where three vehicles from each state are nominated on the day as a team, and the fastest aggregate time is the winner.

From these two types of competition a variety of awards will be determined, two of which are combined with achievements in the Concours events.

Baskerville Raceway (1958)

Baskerville Raceway, the oldest track in continuous use in Australia, is the venue. Just 21 Kms from Hobart, the track is rated by many top line drivers as the best short circuit of them all. It is an extremely safe track; even if you leave the blacktop it is unlikely you or your car will come to any grief.

What do you need to do to participate?

There are a few basic requirements for your car and you to comply with scrutineering and licensing. Full details will be provided, and all assistance will be forthcoming to help you enjoy the day.

Entry Guidelines

An introductory guide to the Sporting Event, complete with driving instructions to the track, is available in either
Microsoft Word or Acrobat PDF formats.

(You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the latter, this is a free download.)

Post Rally Tour

Day 1 Monday April 13th

The Post Rally Tour commences from the Tasmania Golf Club on Hobart's Eastern Shore (not far from the Hobart Airport). The Farewell Brunch will preceed the commencement of the PRT, which will be around 12 noon. From the Tasmania Golf Club, the tour will travel to nearby Sorell, and then South down the Tasman Peninsula to historic Port Arthur, site of Tasmania's infamous convict-built penal settlement. We will be visiting the Tesselated Pavement, Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, Blow Hole and Doo Town on the way. Overnight at Port Arthur Comfort Inn, with the opportunity to go on the Ghost Tour after the evening meal.

Day 2 Tuesday April 14th

The following morning you may wish to take a guided walking tour of the convict settlement, or perhaps a 30 minute harbour cruise. There is also the opportunity to take a two and a half hour Tasman Island Cruise, returning around lunchtime. Lunch could either be at Port Arthur, Sorell or Orford, or on the way to our next destination. Tour delegates will travel via Nubeena with a possible visit to the Devil Park, then up the scenic East Coast, visiting the Spiky Bridge and Kate's Berry Farm on our way to Swansea, where accommodation will be in selected B&B establishments, including Meredith House, Schouten House, Tubby & Padmans, Redcliffe House, Abbotsford Heritage House, Lester Cottages and Freycinet Waters. Dinner together that evening will be at The Bark Mill.

Day 3 Wednesday April 15th

Delegates travel to Freycinet Peninsula and visit Coles Bay, a popular holiday destination overlooked by The Hazards mountain range. Perhaps hike up to the 'saddle' between two mountains and witness the view of one of Tasmania's most photographed iconic beaches, Wineglass Bay. Lunch at Coles Bay followed by the continuation of the trip north via Elephant Pass and St. Marys Pass to St Helens on Georges Bay. Accommodation is at the recently built Tidal Waters Resort.

Day 4 Thursday April 16th

From St Helens we travel to the north of the state, following some of the Targa Tasmania stages. Visit Pyengana Cheese, Pub in the Paddock, and the Derby Tin Mine Centre for morning tea. Then on to Scottsdale, Bridport and Georgetown for lunch at the newly developed Cove Restaurant. Travel from there across the Batman Bridge to Tamar Valley Resort at the delightful Swiss Village of Grindlewald, with an opportunity to visit the many famous vineyards on the way. Maybe even time for a game of golf, a swim with the kids or a visit to the gym. Dinner that evening at the resort.

Day 5 Friday April 17th

After breakfast join in with the tour of the Boags Brewery in Launceston, followed perhaps by some shopping and a nice lunch in the city. The afternoon is at leisure, or if you still feel like driving, perhaps a gentle drive out to Joe Chromy's vineyard at Relbia, or a tour of the historic Brickendon and Woolmers property at Longford. Also consider historic Clarendon House, and Tas Gourmet Sauce at Evandale. Accommodation that evening is at the Country Club Villas. Later a visit to the National Automobile Museum will be eagerly awaited for a splendid evening meal (included).

Day 6 Saturday April 18th

Following breakfast at the Harley Davidson "Devils Kitchen", we depart Launceston for Sheffield, the 'town of murals' and a scenic trip along the country roads of the Mersey-Forth Valley, with visits to 41 Degrees South and the Salmon and Ginseng farm. Enjoy the coastal scenery while traveling towards Devonport in preparation for farewells and boarding the Spirit of Tasmania late that afternoon.
