Breakfast and Penitentiary Tour

Sunday June 27th, 2010

With a few of our members away at present, especially those who regularly attend our monthly club outings, numbers were disappointingly low with only 9 for breakfast at The Timeless Way. However, it was great to see a new members Joe and Nadine attending. (Probably a bit early for Joe, as he had his sweater inside out). Breakfast was sumptuous as usual and conversation was as always light and cheery.

The PVCC had organised a tour through the old Penitentiary at 11.30 am, and had invited the JCCT to attend, of which a handful accepted, and met them there in time for the grand tour. Marilyn and I had done this tour before, but at night, which was absolutely fascinating and what we believed was better than the Port Arthur Ghost tour.

The total numbers for the tour were over 30, as it was also open to the public as well, as was not a special tour just for the PVCC. The tour guide managed admirably with the large group, and was very informative, despite his favourite word being 'bloody' which he managed to get into his spiel about every 3rd or 4th word.

The large photo prior to 1963, of the entire huge precinct was very impressive when thankfully the National Heritage Trust came into being and the last remaining remnants from our history were saved from the bull dozers. Absolutely amazing stuff, 'if only the walls could talk'.

A wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning.
