Past Events in the JCCT

Dunalley Murraville Golf Club
Sunday August 15, 2010

We awoke to yet another incredible winters day, with an estimated high of 16 degrees (it reached 18), and with one last minute cancellation and one last minute acceptance, the numbers were still at 15. We were all due to meet in Hunter Street at around 10 am and convoy out at around 10.30 ish, however, unbeknown to us all (because I guess we did not read the paper), there was to be a charity fun run on that morning and the roads had been closed off with all vehicles being turned away from the area.

The funniest thing though was the Irving's in their "Royal Lady" who arrived in the city just as the roads were being closed, were waved through. I think the police thought it was the GG or someone important. So there they were driving merrily down the closed off road and almost got to the end before an astute policeman realised that these two in the front were just mere mortals and of no importance and stopped them to ask were they were going, and of course, they were turned around and directed back out.

With a few frantic phone calls to other attendees for the day we eventually met in the car park along side the Grand Chancellor. The 'Royal Lady' led the convoy out of the city, picking up Tony Prins and Shirley in his E-Type waiting at the Domain, and Allister Shoobridge, Faye Duffy, Cleve Allen and Jill Hobbs in their Daimler X300 and XJ6 respectively, at Sorrell on the way. The later 2 couples were sitting in Banjos in Sorell enjoying a morning cuppa and said the convoy looked extremely impressive as they passed through the town.

Lorraine Elder was also in the convoy from the city, in her U-beaut, super sonic, bright red Holden mean machine, but shortly after leaving the city on the Tasman Highway, Lorraine must have hit the kick down or something, as suddenly this bright red blur goes screaming past us all and disappears into the distance. We found her waiting for us on the side of the road as we approached Sorell, and tucked her self in once again at the rear of the pack.

It was a truly leisurely Drive through to Dunalley with 3 Daimler's and 5 Jaguar's actually remaining in convoy for the whole distance. A very impressive sight indeed with much head turning, pointing and waving along the way, arriving at the Murraville Golf Club in style. This attracted a further crowd of onlookers from golfers to staff members, and it was a good half hour before we had all departed the car park and made our way inside for a few rounds of drinks to whet the appetite for what turned out to be a very delicious lunch. It was a simple menu of either a roast (lamb) or fish and chips, with apple crumble or pavlova for dessert. Garlic bread was supplied for all, with most having the roast of the day and opting for the apple crumble for dessert, but what ever was ordered was a generous serving, especially that slice of pavlova. Very reasonably priced and enjoyed by all.

The conversation was constant and varied, and as the afternoon wore on, no one took advantage of a round of golf, or a game of pool or darts. Such was the enjoyment of the meal & conversation. However, many agreed that we should hold the JCCT annual golf tournament there and make a full day of it, as even non-golfers could attend & enjoy a meal or BBQ (great idea-Ed)

The movement homeward started about 2.30 pm, as the sky started to cloud over and looked as if rain was imminent. An uneventful trip home at the close of yet another successful JCCT Southern outing. It was good to see some of our recent new members attending once again, and once our wandering nomads return home, our numbers will be up again...
