Baskerville Regularity Laps (Hoon Day)

Sunday July 18th, 2010

An early morning shower ensured a wet and slippery start to the Regularity Day organized by the Club Motori Italia at Baskerville Raceway on Sunday, the 18th of July. However, the track dried out well in the practice session and times soon quickened.

Rod Force, Derek Weller and Roger Walker flew the flag for our club in their XK8, XKR and 3.8 Mk2 respectively. Unfortunately, a split radiator on my MK2 prevented my involvement. The day was very well organized, with an eclectic mix of 26 cars lining up for practice laps, which were timed. From this, drivers then nominated their lap time, and the driver that was closest over the 4 timed laps was deemed the winner.

There was ample time on the track, with all cars having at least four timed sessions, and some opted for a fifth. All drivers were keen for some quick laps, and many very respectable times were recorded. Interesting, only 3 of the 26 cars entered were Italian, showing a broad range of machinery.

The event was won by Dale Harrex in his Mazda MX5 (96 points of a possible 100). Rod was the quickest and most consistent of our group, despite a little 'off road driving' in the first practice lap. Derek Weller, in his highly desirable XKR convertible, consistently increased his pace and thoroughly enjoyed his track time. Roger's wonderful bright red MK2 looked great on the track and he posted some very consistent and respectable lap times, particularly as the track dried out.

Congratulations to the Club Motori Italia for excellent organization and their friendly hospitality.
