Christmas Barbeque at Ross
Sunday December 12, 2010

After another dubious weather forecast the night before we decided to take the risk and wheel out the convertible. With the potato salad and picnic gear safely loaded we set out for Pontville where we met up with Norm Bickley, Jan and Richard Holtsbaum (and Charlie) and Rod and Ann Force. As the weather was not conducive to standing around for a chat we then headed to Ross and after a pretty uneventful journey managed to find Tony Prins and his son Brent setting up the pergolas and barbeques under lovely sunny conditions. It wasn't long before the numbers swelled to 31 Jaguars and dare we say 8 other things, all containing 74 lovely people and honorary member Charlie Holtsbaum (the poodle); a very fine turnout, perhaps the biggest for the Club for some time.

Much time was spent admiring the stunning array of cars, as did many members of the public during the day, and catching up with old friends and being introduced to new ones. Geoff and Tony introduced their friends John Bagrie and David Broughton who had recently bought the ex Rick Ashworth Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign - a very nice car - and it wasn't long before they were signed up as new members following an impromptu committee meeting; welcome, John and David.

The only thing that could compete with the cars was the spread brought by everyone. It was a sight to behold with such a fine array of salads and could have put any fine restaurant to shame. Tony Prins and his band of helpers did a wonderful job of manning the barbeques and cooking to perfection plenty of sausages, hamburgers, steaks and chicken. Not to be outdone with the salads, the deserts were something else; cheesecakes, pavlovas, Ron's famous trifle to name a few, certainly something to cheer about. This was finally followed by Tony Sadleir's traditional fudge; traditional in that Tony always brings his to-die-for fudge and no function would be the same without it. After being well fed the socialising continued only to be interrupted by a very welcome phone call from members Barry and Athalie Wiggins in Bunbury WA; you know, those two grey nomads waltzing matilda around the countryside. It was also Athalie's birthday, so Happy Birthday Ath, Jenni didn't let on your age!!

It wasn't long before the time had come to start saying our fond farewells to one and all for 2010 and head for home. Again we tempted fate and put the roof down, as you can with such a fine beast, but we only got to Mangalore before the weather finally won and the precipitation forced the hood back up. Brian was somewhat relieved as the wind was becoming somewhat uncomfortable and conversation almost impossible, must be getting soft. Don't know how the Swans and Edwards do it all the time!

It was a fabulous day and I'm sure that everyone would agree a great venue, congenial company, delicious food (fit for a king); where else would we have wanted to be. Even the weather gods were kind to us in the end. Thank you to all those that provided such wonderful dishes and helped on the day, especially Tony Prins.

Finally as a Club event it was very successful having everyone together from far and wide, can we have some more events like it!
